Commissioning notes

The practical detail, before you ask for it.

Most studios make you get on a call to find out what's included and roughly what it costs. Here it is written down instead, so you can decide whether it's worth your time.

Included as standard

The writing

I draft every page from what you tell me in the first conversation. You correct what I've got wrong. There's no blank content form and no waiting on you to fill it in.

Design and build

Hand-written HTML and CSS. No theme, no page builder, no plugin stack that needs updating forever. It loads fast now and it stays fast.

Built for phones

Designed narrow first, because that's where most of your enquiries come from. Composed on a small screen rather than merely surviving on one.

Working forms

Tested end to end, delivering somewhere you'll actually see them. A contact form that quietly fails is worse than none.

The launch

I point your domain at the new site and keep your email flowing through the change. This is the step that usually goes wrong in other people's hands.

Handover

Domain and hosting stay in your name throughout. If you stop working with me you keep the site and every file under it.

About money

Cost depends on how many pages there are and how much writing is needed, so publishing one number would mislead most people reading it. What you get is a fixed price in writing before I start, and it doesn't move afterwards unless you ask for something we never discussed.

Payment is normally due at launch, after you've seen the finished site and signed off on it. There's no retainer bolted onto the build and no subscription running quietly in the background.

Questions people ask first

How long does it take?

One to three weeks from the first email to going live, with most of that being the build and revisions. Where you land in that range comes down to how quickly answers come back. It stretches if you're busy and that's genuinely fine. Nobody's business should pause because a website needs a photograph.

Can you work with what I already have?

Sometimes. It's often faster to rebuild than to untangle a theme with fourteen plugins hanging off it, and I'll tell you which one applies once I've looked rather than guessing in advance.

What if I don't like it?

You've seen it before paying, so you can walk away owing nothing. That's happened twice and both times it was the right call for everyone.

Do I need to supply photographs?

Send them if you have them. Pictures of your own work beat anything from a stock library even when they're taken on a phone in bad light. If you have none I'll design around it.

Will I be able to update it myself?

Depends what you want to change. Text edits and new pages I usually handle, and it's quick. If you'd rather do it yourself we can build it so you can, though that decision changes the shape of the project and is worth discussing early.

Can I see finished work?

Yes, and you should before deciding anything. Completed projects

Ask about your own project

A couple of sentences about the business and what's bothering you is plenty to start with.
